What was China’s one-child policy?
Families were only allowed to have one child
The parents had to apply for marriage and apply again to have a child
If the parents did not comply, they would face serious consequences, e.g. being deprived of benefits, pay a fine, and were liable for forced abortions and child sterilisation
Exceptions were: Families having a disabled child, belonging to an ethnic minority group, live in a rural area

To stop the unstable increase of China’s population
