Earthquakes And Seismic Waves Flashcards
This occurs due to the interaction of tectonic plates
Earthquakes
This is located in the earth’s interior specifically in the hard rocks of the lithosphere
The focus
This is located in the earth’s interior specifically in the hard rocks of the lithosphere
The focus
This is the point on the earth’s surface that is directly above the focus
Epicenter
What are the two types of seismic wave
Primary and secondary
This wave is originated in the focus of an earthquake and so called because they are the first waves to reach earthquake recording stations
Primary waves
This wave are rock particles that vibrate at right angles to the direction of the wave they move more slowly and arrive at the earthquake recording stations later than primary waves do.
Secondary or transverse wave
These waves travel along the ground with side to side and up and down motions causing objects on the ground to move in the same manner
Surface waves
