Earthquakes Flashcards
What is an earthquake
An earthquake is a sudden movement caused by the plates on the crust, the pressure releasing from two plates grinding past eachother, causing the ground to shake.
Where is the focus of an earthquake
The point inside the earths crust where the earthquake starts
Where is the focus of an earthquake
The point inside the earths crust where the earthquake starts
What percent of the world’s earthquakes happen at the pacific ring of fire?
70%
What comes out of the focus
Tremors/shock waves
Describe what aftershocks are and how often they occur after the earthquake
An aftershock is the feeing of shaken crust trying to move itself back into its original state,it can happen hours, weeks or months after the earthquake
Draw a diagram of the earthquake (start of chapter)
Labels: focus, epicentre, tremors/shockwaves, fault line (on surface & underground)
What is the name of the person who studies earthquakes
Seismologist
What is the machine that is used to measure & detect movement of an earthquake and what is it recorded on
The machine I called a seismometer and it is recorded on a seismograph
Name 3 other methods used to study earthquakes
- Checking the amount of stress put on a rock
- Noting changes o father levels of water and oil in underground wells
- Using lasers to monitor movement along fault lines
When was the biggest recorded earthquake
It was in Chile 1960 at 9.5
Less than 3.5 richter scale
Generally recorded but not felt
3.5 - 5.4 on the Richter scale
Often felt but rarely causes damage
Under 6.0 on the Richter scale
Slight damage to well built buildings
6.0 on a Richter scale
Major damage to poorly built buildings
