Earthquakes Flashcards
How are seismic waves produced?
-produced in an earthquake.
-spread out from the epicentre
What is the epicentre?
The nearest point of the surface to where the earthquake originates. That actual origin is called the focus
What are the 2 types of earthquakes (seismic waves)
-Primary seismic waves (P-waves)
-Secondary seismic waves (S-waves)
Are Primary seismic waves longitudinal or transverse?
longitudinal
They push and pull on the material as they move through the Earth.
Are Secondary seismic waves longitudinal or transverse?
transverse
They travel slower than P-waves
They shake the material they pass through inside the Earth from side to side
Can P- waves travel through the liquid outer core?
Yes, they can travel through liquid outer core
-but they are refracted that the boundary between the mantle and molten outer core
-due to the sudden density medium change
-therefore their speed changes and are refracted
Can S-waves travel through the molten outer core
No
Because they are transverse waves
