Earth Systems and Cycles Flashcards

1
Q

What is an isolated system?

A

A system that does not exchange energy or matter with its surroundings. Not very common.

Q

What is a closed system?

A

A system where there is an exchange of energy but not mass (like a food cooler).

3
Q

What is an open system.

A

A system that has both the exchange of energy and mass (water cycle).

Q

What is feedback?

A

It is when there is a change in one part of the system which causes a change in another part of the system.

Q

What is a positive feedback loop? Give an example.

A

A loop in which a part of the system increases, leading to an increase in another part. Example would be temperature rising, causing ice to melt, leading the ocean to absorb more heat.

6
Q

What is a negative feedback loop? Give an example.

A

When there is an increase/decrease in one part of the system leading to an increase/decrease in another part of the system. Opposites. An example would be Lokta-Volterra- predator populations rise and prey population fall, leading to a decrease in prey food.

Q

What is an ecological threshold?

A

The point at which a relatively small change or disturbance in external conditions causes a rapid change in an ecosystem.

10
Q

What happens when an ecological threshold has been passed?

A

The ecosystem can no longer return to the original threshold and reaches metastable equilibrium.

16
Q

Between 1968 and 2005, what percentage of wetland has been redacted?

A

21%

17
Q

Between 1968 and 2005, what percentage of wetland basins have been lost or degrated?

A

69%

18
Q

What is a scientific Experiment?

A

An organized and detailed series of steps to validate or reject a hypothesis.

19
Q

What is the Precautionary Principle?

A

Where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measure to prevent environmental degradation.
