Earth Structure Flashcards
When did scientists think that the earth was formed?
billions of years ago.
What material moved to the centre of our world when it was made?
heavier material moved to the centre.
What material floated towards the top when the earth was formed?
lighter material floated towards the top.
What is the most dense part of the earth?
the inner core
What is the inner core made of?
a mixture of nickle and iron.
what is the outer core?
a very think liquid
where are the thinnest parts of the earths crust found?
under the oceans
where are the thickest parts of the earths crust?
under mountain ranges
what is the mantle made out of?
hot solid material, but it an move it just takes a very long time to do so.
what is the crust and upper part of the mantle called?
lithosphere
how do scientists know what the inner structure is like?
they use seismic waves from earthquakes to find out what it is like.
what would happen if the earth was the same all the way through?
the waves would go straight through but would curve outwards.
how are seismic waves caused?
earthquakes
What are the two different types of seismic waves?
p waves and s waves
what are s waves?
cannot go though liquids
