Earth Space Science Flashcards
Tectonic plate theory
Alfred Wegener the Rory thinking the continents where once a whole called Pangea then all split called the continental drift
3 types of plate boundaries
Divergent
Plates move apart, creating new crust. This can cause volcanic activity and shallow earthquakes.
Convergent
One plate moves under another, destroying crust. This can cause a variety of earthquakes and a line of volcanoes on the overriding plate.
Transform
Plates slide past each other horizontally, neither creating nor destroying crust. This can cause shallow earthquakes and little or no volcanic activity.
Landforms associated with the types of plate boundaries
fold mountains, mid ocean ridges, ocean trenches and types of volcano
The Indo-Australian Plate
a major plate combining the Australian and Indian Plates
Evidence of continental drift
the fit of the continents; the distribution of ancient fossils, rocks, and mountain ranges; and the locations of ancient climatic zones
