Biology Flashcards
Biotic and Abiotic
Biotic factors are living things within an ecosystem; such as plants, animals, and bacteria, while abiotic are non-living components; such as water, soil and atmosphere
Biotic survival
the study of how living components of an ecosystem, or biotic factors, affect the survival of organisms and populations
Symbiosis
interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.
Flow of energy in an ecosystem
in a one-way stream, from primary producers to various consumers
The energy pyramid
a model that shows the flow of energy from one trophic, or feeding, level to the next in an ecosystem
Factors affecting population size
birth rate, death rate, and migration
Calculation for estimating population size
n = (total area of habitat / area of sample unit) x mean number of individuals per sample unit.
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis converts carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose
Respiration
a process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide from the oxidation of complex organic substances.
The Carbon Cycle
the process that moves carbon between plants, animals, and microbes; minerals in the earth; and the atmosphere
The cycle of matter in an ecosystem
the constant movement of chemical elements and compounds between living organisms and the non-living environment
The impact of bushfires on the cycle of matter
Changing soil,changing water quality,influencing climate
