Earth Science B Quiz 5/15 Flashcards
What are the three methods of heat transfer?
Convection, conduction, and radiation.
What is convection?
Rising and sinking or warm and cold air.
What is convection driven by?
Density.
What is the most effective method of heat transfer?
Convection.
What is conduction?
Heat transferred via direct contact.
What does radiation travel as?
Waves.
What is insolation?
Incoming solar radiation, The total energy entering the Earth’s atmosphere from the Sun.
What does insolation do?
Absorbed or reflected by the earth.
Where is insolation most intense?
At the equator.
Where is insolation most spread out?
At the poles.
Incoming =
Shortwave UV.
Outgoing =
Longwave infrared energy.
How is air heated?
From the ground up.
What does the greenhouse effect do?
Traps longwave energy (infrared) which has been re-radiated from the Earth’s surface.
What are some greenhouse gases?
Carbon dioxide and methane.
