Earth Science Flashcards
What was the name of the super continent?
Pangea
When did the super continent form?
220 million years ago
Three types of boundaries:
Divergent
Convergent
Transform
What is divergent boundaries?
The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving apart.
What are converging boundary?
The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving together.
What are transform boundary?
The boundary between two tectonic plates that are sliding past each other .
What do transform boundaries cause?
Earthquakes
What do converging boundaries cause?
Mountains, volcanoes and trenches .
What diverging boundaries cause?
Rift valleys
5 reasons why evidence of continental drift?
- Coastline fit
- Similar fossils
- Landforms Created by glaciers now widely separated
- Magnetic poles wandering
- Old climate zones
Who proposed the idea of sea floor spreading?
Harry Hess
Which is the thicker crust?
Oceanic crust is denser
What are convection currents?
Rising hot magma pushes up, then it is then pushed to one side by more rising magma, the ridge splits and moves apart. Tension between surrounding rocks cause rift zones & shallow earthquakes.
Name of the crust?
Lithosphere
What is the Earth made out of?
- Crust
- Mantle
- Outer core
- Inner core
