Earth science Flashcards
Minerals
Any solid object is made out of minerals.
Lithosphere
the hardest and outer layer of earth and also the thinnest layer.
Magma
a very hot mixture of molten rocks and gases. forms just below the earths lithosphere.
Sediments
Material that is broken down by weathering or erosion and is moved by wind or water and is moved into layers.
Lava
hot lava or semi fluid rock that has erupted from a volcano.
Intrusive
When magma forms inside the crust and rocks are formed
Extrusive
when lava settles on the outside and rocks can form in the air or when the hit land
Igneous
rocks that are formed from lava or magma
Abrasive
a property of an object that scratches another
Batholiths
Intrusive rocks that have a large bidy of mass that can span across 100 kilometeres
Lustre
The amount of shine that a mineral / rock can reflect
Streak
the color that comes out when u starch the mineral / rock against a harder surface.
Sandstone
sandstone is a sedimentary rock that is formed from grains of sand that are being cemented over a long time.
Shale
Shale is a sedimentary rock that formed from layers of consolidation of clay / mud.
Conglomerate
Conglomerate is a sedimentary rock that is formed by multiple sedimentary rocks cemented together.
Mudstone
Mudstone is a fine grained sedimentary rock without layering
Siltstone
Siltstone has grains that are slightly bigger than those of Mudstone or Slate.
Coal
Coal is a sedimentary rock that is formed from organic matter over the course of millions of years.
Limestone
Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed from the remains of sea organisms. It consists mainly of calcium carbonate.
Rock salt
Rock salt is a sedimentary deposit formed when a salt lake or seabed dried up. Its main chemical is sodium chloride.
Mineral Ores
Mineral Ores are rocks mined to obtain a metal or other chemical within them
Mining
Mining is the extraction of natural resources from the Earth
Environmental Impact Statement
Environmental Impact Statement is the study of the possible effects of a planned project on the environment
Rehabilitated
Rehabilitated is when a object is restored to its previous condition
Overburden
Overburden is the waste rock removed from below the topsoil. This rock is replaced when the area is restored.
Open-cut-mining
Open-cut-mining is when scours out soil and rocks on the surface of the land
underground mining
underground mining is mining that uses shafts and tunnels to remove rock from deep below the surface
