earth science Flashcards
Weathering
The chemical and physical processes that break down rock at Earth’s surface.
physical weathering
Any process that breaks rock down into smaller pieces without changing the chemistry of the rock; typically wind and water.
frost wedging
The mechanical breakup of rock caused by the expansion of freezing water in cracks and crevices of rock.
Unloading
Reduced pressure on igneous rock causes it to expand and allows slabs of outer rock to break off in layers in a process called exfoliation
Agent of Weathering
Are factors responsible for weathering, for example; Wind, Water, Gravity
chemical weathering
The process in which rock is broken down by changes in its chemical makeup
Oxidation
Chemical weathering process that occurs when some minerals are exposed to oxygen and water over time
Acid rain
A form of chemical weathering that breaks down rocks by changing their chemical makeup
Indicator
A compound that changes color in the presence of an acid or a base
carbonic acid
a very weak acid formed in solution when carbon dioxide dissolves in water.
Biological weathering
Physical or chemical weathering caused by plants or animals.
Erosion
The process by which wind, water, ice, or gravity transports soil and sediment from one location to another
Deposition
Process in which sediment is laid down in new locations.
Cementing
Process that turns sediment into hard rock when a binding material bonds the clay, pebbles, sand, and rocks.
Sediment
small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things
