Earth's system Flashcards
Any property that can be observed using the fife senses
or can be measured without changing the matter.
Physical properties
Weight-how heavy an object is (mass is how much “stuff” (matter) something is made of )
Weight/Mass
A state of matter that maintains it”s own shape instead of conforming to the shape of it’s container.
solid
Something that can flow and takes the shape of its container like water, juice ,but it has fixed amount of space(volume)similar to how a solid stay the same size
liquid
It allow something like heat or electricity to float or pass through easily.
Conduct
Energy that moves from something hot do something cold, a form of energy.
Heat
A substance found in nature, minerals make up rocks.
Minerals
How easily or difficult it is to scratch a mineral surface.
Hardness
The color of its powder when you rub it on a hard ,rough surface like a tile
Streak
The colored powder Left Behind when a mineral is scraped cross a hard service like a ceramic tile, which helps identify the mineral by its “streak” color.
Tiles
It’s what light reflects back to our eyes .Minerals are colored because they absorb some colors of light and reflect the rest.
Color
How shiny a rock or mineral looks when light shines on it, like a mirror,or glassy,or even dull.( luster is a physical property used by mineralogist to help identify minerals).
Luster
Some men was break along smooth ,flat lines instead of randomly, like with you crack an egg.
Cleavage
Where you try to scratch a rock with a different object (like a fingernail or a penny) to see if it’s hard or soft.
Scratch test
Surface, erosion ,weathering, rapid, drastic ,slow changes, landslide, volcano, earthquake, magnetic.
Supporting vocabulary
A natural formed combination a minerals in other natural materials.
Rocks
A solid, naturally formed substance that always has the same composition and the same properties.
Minerals
The dirt and stuff that settles to the bottom of it’s always carried and then deposit by water wind or ice.
Sediment
rock formed from compacted sediment.
sedimentary
rock formed from magma or lava.
igneous
Formed from existing rock heat and pressure caused the minerals to form new combinations or new crystals.
metamorphic
Magma-molten rock Within Earth
Attributes or characteristics
pressure- is like a push or a squeeze and that pressure helps change the rocks in the earth
Rock cycle- the continuous process of changing rocks are formed from old rock materials.
