Earth&Atmosphere Flashcards
What is wegener’s theory of continental drift?
Continents fit like a jigsaw and matching fossil and rocks suggest the continents are constantly shifting
What is contained in Earth’s Atmosphere?
The atmosphere is made of nitrogen (79%) oxygen (20%) argon (1%) and other gases
How has Earths atmosphere changed over time?
- Early atmosphere lots of methane and carbon dioxide
- Water condensed to form oceans and much less carbon dioxide
- Trees release oxygen and carbon dioxide levels reduced
What is the structure of the earth like?
Earth has an inner core, outer core, mantle and crust
Tectonics played are constantly shifting around, can move quickly such as during an earthquake
What impact do humans have on the Earth?
Humans burn fossil fuels making carbon dioxide
Plastics are difficult to dispose of properly
What is the Miler and Urey experiment of 1952?
Recreate life replicating the early conditions on Earth
Carbon compounds had formed which make proteins suggesting this is how life began
What was there very little of in the early atmosphere ?
Oxygen
What can happen if the tectonic plates move?
Earthquakes and volcanoes
