Earth and Space Flashcards
what are the advantages of a good soil buffering capacity
the greater ability the soil has to resist changes in its pH when acidic or alkaline compounds are added to it
what are some soil contaminants
acid rain and pesticides
how does acid rain contaminate soil
destroys nutrients and kills decomposers needed for nutrient recycle
give an example of the phosphorus cycle
you have phosphate rocks and then when it rains it causes a erosion and then it goes into the water and then the phosphates dissolves and then it settles down creating more phosphate rocks. the same thing happens when you use fertilizer containing phosphate
explain eutrophication
1-Phosphate gets into water
2-Algae grows (phosphate=water)
3-Algae grows and covers surface of water and blocks sunlight
4-Plants don’t provide as much O2 and fishes die
5-Algae dies and sinks to the bottom making water more shallow
how do human activities accelerate eutrophication
humans use many products containing phosphate which causes more phosphate to be in the water
what are prevailing winds
major atmosphere currents that blows in a given direction according to atmospheric circulation
are some air contaminants
acid rain, metals like mercury arsenic and lead are burned and toxic for humans, CFCs destroy the ozone layer, dust and other particles destroy the respiratory system
how do prevailing winds effect on the dispersal of air pollution
prevailing winds drag these air pollutants all over the region
what is soil buffering capacity
soil has the ability to limit pH variations
