Earth and Space Flashcards
Define Astronomy
Is the scientific study of the universe and the objects within it.
Define a neap tide
A neap tide refers to a period of moderate tides when the Sun and moon are at right angles to each other.
Define a spring tide
A tide that comes just after a new or full moon when there is a huge difference between high and low water.
Define high tide
The tide gets higher when the sea or ocean is closer to the moon.
Define rotation
Is the spinning of an object around its axis.
Define orbit
The motion of one object around another.
Why do we experience the seasons
Because Earth’s axis is titled on an angle and different parts of Earth receive more solar energy than others.
Explain the difference between high and low tides.
High tides are a little higher and low tides are a little lower than average. This happens when the Earth is between the moon and the Sun.
What are the differences between a neap tide and a spring tide?
Neap tides happen when the Sun and moon form a right angle. Spring tides occur when the Sun, moon and Earth align, resulting in higher and lower tides. Also because tidal range or the height difference between the water
What are the types of eclipses?
Lunar, solar, total, partial and annular eclipse.
What causes an eclipse?
Sometimes when the moon orbits Earth, it moves between the Sun and Earth. when this happens, the moon blocks the light of the Sun from reaching Earth.
Name the planets in order from the Sun.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What is the difference between Terrestrial and Jovian Planets? (List 3 for Jovian)
Jovian planets are larger than Terrestrial planets.
Jovian planets are made from gaseous surfaces.
Jovian planets have no solid surface.
What is the difference between Terrestrial and Jovian Planets? (List 3 for Terrestrial).
They are made from solid surface,
They are more dense
and have a closer proximity to the Sun.
What are the types of Moons?
Full moon, New moon, Cresent, Gibbous
