Ears Flashcards
Where in the ear is an air filled cavity and eustachian tube?
Middle ear
what does the eustachian tube do?
Connects to the nasopharynx and allows you to equalise
forced valsava manoeuvre to clear middle ear
round window membrane reptured. Loss of fluid from inner ear –> ears ringing, vertigo, disorientation, blockage sensation
Surgery
barotrauma caused by descent
most common damage
ear drum bulges inwards, eardrum reptures, cold water into middle ear, temp drops affecting balance and hearing, body heats cold water, feel fine, ascent, inform supervisor
what does valsalva manoeuvre mean?
ear cleaning
what can block the outer ear canal?
wax, hood, ear plugs
what is reversed ear?
middle ear pressure greater than outer ear pressure
what is barotrauma
pressure = baro trauma= damage
what barotrauma can occur if you ascend too quickly
decrease of pressure on ascent causes air spaces to expand and tissues to swell. gas escapes into other tissues or the bloodstream leading to further damage
where are the body air spaces?
Sinuses, ears, lungs
stomach, intestines, teeth
what are sinuses
air filled cavities in the skull that connect to respiratory tract
