early jawed vertebrates Flashcards
what are gnathostomes? when do they date back to?
• Vertebrates with jaws
• Origin- greek
○ Gnathos = jaw
○ Stoma = mouth
• Good fossil record to the mid-silurian (approx. 430 mya) - bc. Of bony material
Previous chordates would try to “suck” in their prey/food - emergence of jaws is a game changer
what two structural advancements are game changing about gnathostomes?
jaws and paired appendages
what is the greatest advancement in vertebrates? is it in the fossil record?
- Jaws
• “greatest advancement in vertebrates” - Alfred Romer
• Appear in fossil record fully formed
• Fossils include hyoid apparatus supporting jaws
describe the anatomy and importance of paired appendages. what will they eventually give rise to?
- Paired pectoral and pelvic fins (paired appendages)
• Very significant - for motion
• Supported by cartilaginous rays and collagen- connects them to motile structure (the rays)
• Pectoral and pelvic girdles
Eventually would give rise to the fore and hind limbs
list the nine derived traits of gnathostomes
- Jaws - from mandibular gill arch
- Jointed branchial arches - allowance
- Hypobranchial musculature - help motility
- Two olfactory tracts leading to two nostrils- sensory, protection of chemicals
- 1st gill slit squeezed to form spiracle
- Three semicircular canals
- Conus arteriosus
- Horizontal septum
- Vertebrae with centra and ribs
what were jaws derived from?
mandibular arch (1st branchial arch) - lower jaw
what is the purpose of joined branchial arches?
• Give increased flexibility and robustness
what is the purpose of the hypobranchial musculature?
suction, inhalation
what does the olafactory tract do?
leads to two nostrils
what is the spiracle derived from?
1st gill slit.
what does the hyoid arch derive from?
seconf branchial arch
what is the conus arteriosus? purpose?
small chamber in front of ventricle
dampening strong ventricular pressure
what derived feature affected the ears? which one was added?
- Three semicircular canals - addition of horizontal
what does the horizontal septum separate?
Horizontal septum - epaxial and hypaxial units
what does the vertebrae with centra protect?
- Vertebrae with centra around notochord and ribs
