early amphibians Flashcards
1
Q
Two distinct lineages
A
• Batrachomorpha ○ Stem amphibians ○ Derived fishapod 1 ○ Have lots of fish like features • Reptiliomorpha ○ Stem amniotes ○ Derived fishapod 2 ○ A bit more advanced than batrachomorpha
2
Q
describe •
• Batrachomorpha - temnospondyls
A
- Gave rise to modern lissamphibians
- Largest and longest lasting group
- Large, stocky semi-aquatic predators
- Short lateral legs, 4 fingers on forefoot
- Flat, non-kinetic skulls - head bears eyes on dorsal lateral portion, jaw can open wide for food but not dislocate/ “crazy wide”
- Capable of switching between land and water
- e.g. eryops, cacops
3
Q
skeleton?
A
• Femur, girdle - lift organism off the ground, help combat gravity
• No tail fin!! Vertebrae column extends
• Skulls well adapted for them to serve as predators
Derived fishapod #1
4
Q
describe reptiliomorphs
A
- More terrestrial
- Diverse group
- kinetic ability!!! (first group to have this) - can dislocate jaw to feed on organisms larger than them
- Five fingered hand
- Gave rise to amniotes - emergence of an extra membrane for the egg began here!!
- Moist body -> dryer body in reptiliomorphs
5
Q
early lineages of amphibians
A
Temnospondyls and Anthracosaurs
