Early ideas of evolution Flashcards
Catastrophism
Earth experienced many destructive catastrophic events (floods, droughts, etc) which caused the extinction of species that were then replaced by new species from a region nearby
Uniformitarianism
Geological changes are slow and continuous (not catastrophic) and that slow subtle
changes can result in substantial change
Line of Descent
Old fossils lead to modern species and species increase in complexity overtime
Inheritance of Acquired traits
organisms become better adapted to their environments and body parts used most
often become stronger. Then this trait is passed on to their offspring.
Survival of the fittest
organisms compete for limited resources. Organisms with favorable traits that
help them survive will have an increased chance of reproduction. If they reproduce, a growing number
of the population will have these traits in later generations
Descent with modification
theory that natural selection does not demonstrate progress but results in
the ability to survive local environmental conditions
Natural selection
the process through which populations of living organisms adapt and change. Individuals in a population are naturally variable, meaning that they are all different in some ways. This variation means that some individuals have traits better suited to the environment than others.
