Adaptation Flashcards
Behavioural adaptation
The things an organism does to survive
Ex: migration, bird calls, playing dead
Structural adaptation
physical features of an organism that help them to adapt
Ex: beak of a bird, fur on a bear, camouflage of stick insect, fluffy owl feathers, webbed feet
Physiological adaptation
permit organisms to perform a special function
Ex: making venom, hibernation, secreting slime, temperature regulation
mimicry adaptation
- harmless species resemble (mimic) a harmful species so predators will avoid them because they think they are harmful – Viceroys mimic monarchs because monarchs are not palatable
Variation and how it leads to evolution
Two kinds of peppered moths, light and dark. Before the industrial revolution light was favored as they would hide in the light trees and camouflage, during the industrial revolution trees became dark and smoky from the coal in the air and the trees favored the dark ones and the light ones went extinct
Difference between Adaptation and Variation
Adaptation: is a structure, behavior, or physiological process that helps an organism survive and
reproduce in a particular environment
Variation: structural, functional, or physiological differences between individuals. It is important to
note that not all variations become adaptations
Mutations
structural, functional or physiological differences between individuals. It is important to
note that not all variations become adaptations
Selective Advantage
structural, functional, or physiological differences between individuals. It is important to
note that not all variations become adaptations
