Renewal of the Treaty of Etaples
- 1510
- Motivated by councillors
- French pension (£5,000 per annum)
England joins spain to attack France

- Nothing was achieved and 10,000 men were sent however Ferdinand only used HVIII as a diversionary tactic
Anglo-French treaty + following year
- 1514 : Marriage between Mary and Louis XII
- 1515 : death of Louis XII
- Francis I became king who was a personal rival to HVIII
Battle of Spurs
- 1513
- Captured Tournai and Theraunne however these were not major successes but HVIII used propaganda to exclaim it as a massive victory
Battle of Flodden
- 1513
- James IV killed however England failed to exploit this and no advantage was gained
Treaty of London
- 1518
- Diplomatic coup for Wolsey
- European peace was achieved however not sustained
- France, then Spain, HRE and various small states
Death of Ferdinand and Treaty of Noyon
- 1516
- Charles V (New King of Spain) and Maximillian I created an alliance leaving England dangerously isolated
Peace at Cambai
- 1517
- Issues caused for England as the heir presumptive to the Scottish throne was also part of the French nobility causing fears of threat to England

- 1520
- Diplomatic event between France (Francis I) and England
- Extravagant event where nothing was actually achieved
- 2 weeks and cost £15,000
Treaty of Bruges
- 1521
- With Charles V
- HVIII had lots to gain eg territory in invading France whilst allied with HRE and Spain however in the 1522 and 1523 invasions little was gained and they were costly
- Marriage alliance between Mary and Charles
Battle of Pavia
- 1525
- HVIII showed a lack of strategic awareness in an attempt to benefit from the HRE defeat of France
Sack of Rome and Treaty of Amiens
- 1527
- Pope clement was a prisoner of the Emperor causing issues in relation to Catherine of Aragon
- A trade embargo was put on the HRE however England was worse effected
- (Ally with France)
Treaty of Cambrai
- 1529
- This resulted in Wolsey’s fall from power as he was blamed by HVIII
- Between HRE and France which left England diplomatically isolated
Who succeeded Louis XII and why did this cause an issue for HVIII ?
- He was charismatic and young
- HVIII saw him as a personal rival
Following the Treaty of London how did HVIII benefit ?
- England agreed to return Tournai and would receive the French pension (£5,000 a year)
- French also agreed to keep Albany out of Scotland which ensured more peaceful relations on the anglo-sottish border
