- Scheme to withdraw debased coinage and replace them with soundly minted coins
- Debasement was not used throughout her government and reign

- All but one of the Marian Bishops refused to continue their office
What was clear about the religious settlement ?
- The erastian nature of the Church of England

- Some of the early appointments of Bishoprics were moderates and the appointment of Matthew Parker as Archbishop (not exiled under Mary)

- Passed in 1559
- Continuous amendments were made : Variation in eucharist belief was possible and the ‘black rubric’ which explained away the practice of kneeling at the administration of Eucharist was omitted

Why were not all Protestants happy with the Act of Uniformity ?
- Such ornaments of the church and of ministers should be that of those in place in the second year of EVI’s reign (before the 1549 Act of uniformity)
What were the Royal injunctions ?
- 1559
- Instructions about how the church services and government of the Church
- Issued the Queen as the supreme governor
What changes did the Royal injunctions bring about ?
- Enforced Protestant practice.
- Made clear the protestant character (emphasised ‘suppression of superstition’ which was catholic practice)
- Eucharist to be at a simple communion table rather than at the alter (change in the direction of reform)
- Catholic practices eg pilgrimages and use of candles were described as ‘works devised by mans fantasies’
How did the Royal injunctions reflect Elizabeth’s personal views ?
- People persuaded to forbear all vain and contentious disputations in matters of religion
- Disproval of clerical marriage (perspective wives of the clergy had to get a certificate signed by 2 JPs) - Catholic in nature
What was the contradiction in Elizabeth’s approach to the settlement ?
- Wanted to reshape the church along evangelical lines BUT disapproved of the clergy marrying and distrusted preaching
