Ear Vocab Flashcards
portion of the inner ear which houses the organs of Corti. Organ which enables us to hear.
Cochlea
a thin membrane of epithelium which transduces air vibrations into mechanical vibrations on the way to the inner ear.
Tympanic membrane
an epidermal covered cartilage structure which functions in funneling sound vibrations into the external auditory meatus
Auricle
the auditory ossicle which articulates with the tympanic membrane
Malleolus
bony labyrinth structures of the inner ear which provide us with the sense of dynamic equilibrium
Semicircular canals
an air filled chamber within the ear in which the auditory ossicles are located
Tympanic chamber/cavity
microscopic hair-like sound receptors which are stimulated by various frequencies of sound waves
Organs of Corti
a bony canal which carries sound waves to the tympanic membrane and has various protective structures
External auditory meatus
a bony or membranous chamber or maze which makes up all structures within the inner ear
Labyrinth
the area of the inner ear which houses the organs of static equilibrium
Vestibule
a structure of the inner ear which articulates with the stapes and transduces mechanical vibrations into liquid waves as they enter the cochlea
Oval window
passageways which connects the nasopharynx to the tympanic chamber to allow equalization of pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane
eustachian tubes
a small area of the inner ear in which waves exiting the scala tympanii of the cochelea can be dissipated into the tympanic chamber
Round window
a yellow or rarely red waxy substance secreted by glands lining the external auditory meatus
