Ear problems Flashcards
what is cholesteatoma?
A cholesteatoma is an abnormal, noncancerous skin growth that can develop in the middle section of your ear, behind the eardrum. It may be a birth defect, but it’s most commonly caused by repeated middle ear infections.
Diagnosis can be confirmed with temporal bone CT.
Rx includes surgical removal of cholesteatoma and reconstruction of the mastoid and labyrinthythine bone. prognosis is usually good. Pt can expect complete recovery from tinnitus
weber test?
place tuning fork at midline of forehead and assess if there is lateralization of hearing to one side. For the hearing side, it suggests unilateral conductive hearing loss. For the unhearing side, it suggests unilateral sensorineural hearing loss.
Rinne test?
place the tuning fork on mastoid bone behind the ear for 3 sec, and then place it in front of the ear. If former is louder, indicates conductive loss. If latter is louder, indicates sensorineural loss.
What medications have vestibular toxicity
amino glycoside (gentamicin), NSAIDs, loop diuretics, ASA, amiodatone, quinine, cysplatin
What is the indication of head impulse test?
to check for possible labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis
