Ear Anatomy Flashcards
Pterion
H-shaped structure
- frontal, parietal, temporal and sphenoid
- thinnest part of skull
anterior cranial fossa
frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid
middle cranial fossa
sphenoid and tmeporal
posterior cranial fossa
tmeporal and occipital
External ear
collects and conveys sound waves to tympanic membrane
middle ear
amplifies and conducts sound waves to the internal ear
internal ear
converts special sensory information into fluid waves, then Action potentials, conducts APs to brain
Three parts of Auricle
Helix, Tragus + ear lobe
CNV3
superior parts of External acoustic meatus + most of tympanic membrane
C2,3
back of auricle and ear lobe
CNVII
lateral auricle
CNX
Parts of EAM + tympanic membrane
External ear skeleton
tmeporal bone + elastic cartilage
Produces earwax
ceruminous glands
Features of Tympanic Membrane
Pars Flaccida (thin + superior) Umbo (inward depressed) Pars Tensa (thick + inferior)
Sensory Innervation of tympainc membrane
External = CNV3 Internal = CNIX
Ossicles
3 bones of middle ear (articulate via synovial joints):
- Malleus
- Incus
- Stapes
Connects middle ear cavity to nasopharynx
Eustachian Tube (sensory from CNIX e.g. tonsilitis referred pain earache)
Branch of CNVII and taste buds of anterior 2/3rds of tongue
chorda tympani (connects to CNV3)
cochlear =
hearing
vestibular =
balance
where does the otic capsule sit?
Temporal bone (surrounds the cochlea and semicircular canals)
membranous labyrinth sits where?
inside bony labyrinth
fluid that fills the bony labyrinth and floats the membranous labyrinth?
perilymph
