Ear anatomical regions Flashcards
Ear Canal (Auditory Meatus)
Oval shaped opening to the middle & inner ear, separating the inferior concha from the subtragus
Helix
Outermost circular ridge on the external ear
provides a folded cartilaginous rim on the auricle
This refers to a spiral shaped structure
What is Helix
This looks like a “?” symbol
What is helix
This separates the inferior concha from the subtragus
what is the ear canal?
Helix root
Ascends from the center of the ear up toward the face
Superior Helix
Highest section of the Helix
Shaped like a broad arch
Helix Tail
Descends vertically downward
along the most peripheral aspect of the ear
Antihelix
“Y” shaped, spiral ridge opposite Helix
forms an inner concentric circular crest surrounding the concha of the external ear
Superior Crus of the Antihelix
Upper arm and vertical extension of the Antihelix
Inferfior Crus of the Antihelix
Lower arm and horizontal extension of the Antihelix
This flat-edged ridge overhangs the Superior Concha below
Inferior Crus of the Antihelix
Antihelix Body
Broad sloping ridge at the center third of the Antihelix
Antihelix Tail
Narrow ridge at the Inferior third of the Antihelix
Tragus
Refers to a flap
Tragus- location
vertical, trapezoid shaped area that projects over the ear canal
The Antitragus is….
is an L-shaped flap.
This is opposite to the Tragus and inferior to the Antihelix Tail
What is the Antitragus
This flap projects over the lower Inferior Concha and has a distinct curved groove separating it from the Antihelix and the less distinct crevice where it meets the Intertragic Notch
The Antitragus location
The location of the Intertragic Notch is
The curved intersection of the Tragus and Antitragus
This area is the curved intersection of the Tragus and the Antitragus
What is the Intertragic Notch
Where is the Lobe located?
At the base of the external ear
This is a “U”-shaped soft fleshy tissue region at the base of the external ear
What is the Lobe?
Where is the Scaphoid Fossa?
Between the Helix and Antihelix - it is the crescent shaped groove.
What does “Fossa” mean (Scaphoid Fossa)?
A fissure or crevice
What does Scaphoid refer to (Scaphoid Fossa)?
The scaffolding used to form the outer structure of a boat or building during construction. “Scapha” thus refers to boat shaped
Triangular Fossa is located…
Between the Superior Crus and the Inferior Crus of the Antihelix, it is the triangular groove and is shaped like a Gothic arch on its side
This traiangular goove is between the Superior Crus and the Inferior Crus of the Antihelix
What is the Triangular Fossa
This is shaped lie a Gothic arch on its side
What is the Triangular Fossa?
What does Concha refer to?
The Conch sea shell
This is a shell-shaped valley at the very center of the ear?
What is the Concha
The Superior Concha is located
Below the Inferior Crus
It is the Upper Hemiconcha
The Inferior Concha is located
Next to the Ear Canal
It is the Lower Hemiconcha
The Concha Ridge divides…
the Superior Concha and Inferior Concha
This is the extension of the Helix Root onto the Concha floor
What is the Concha Ridge?
What is the Concha Wall?
The hidden, vertical region of the ear which rises up from the Concha floor.
The Concha Wall description (long explanation)
The Wall of the Antitragus is the vertical Concha region underneath the Antitragus, overlying the lower Inferior Concha, whereas the Wall of the Antihelix is the curving, vertical surface which rises from the floor of the Concha up to the Antihelix ridge
The subtragus definition is:
The underside of the Tragus, overlying the Ear Canal
The hidden, underside portion of the brim of the Helix is
The Internal Helix
This lies over the Ear Canal
It is the underside of the Tragus
What is the Subtragus
What is the Internal Helix?
The hidden, underside portion of the brim of the Helix
