6
Q

What is the external auditory canal?

A

A narrow passage that extends to the ear drum
The canal is lined with ceruminious glands which secrete ear wax
Sound waves travel along until they reach the ear drum

Q

Why is the inner ear connected to the nasopharynx?

A

Allows the passage of air and ensure equal pressure inside and outside of the ear
Fluid can be released

11
Q

What happens when sound reaches the middle ear?

A

Vibration at the ear drum membrane changes sound waves to mechanical movements
The ossicles act as levers and conduct this to the inner ear
The ossicles amply and transmit the sound to the oval window

13
Q

Where is the sense of hearing provided?

A

Receptors in the cochlea duct, they are hair cells.
When stimulated, neurotansmitters are released to the brain.

Q

Describe how we hear

A

Sound waves are directed from the auricle down the external auditory canal
They reach the ear drum and this vibrates
This is transmitted to the middle ear where the ossicles move
The ossicles act as levels and conduct vibration to the inner ear
These waves stimulate hair cells in the cochlea
This leads to release of neurotransmitters to the brain
