E4 Brainstem Flashcards
What is the reticular formation?
A central core of nuclei that runs through the entire length of the brainstem
Where is the rostral reticular formation? Caudal reticular formation?
Midbrain and upper pons.
Pons and medulla
What does the Rostral reticular formation regulate?
Alertness, state of consciousness, and the sleep wake cycle
Thru what does the RRF perform its function?
Ascending reticular activating system (ARAS)
Via what does the ARAS project to many cortical regions?
Thalamic nuclei
What is a classic sign of a lesion to the rostral reticular formation?
Coma
What is the caudal reticular formation involved in?
Important motor, reflex and autonomic functions
Which arterial system supplies the structures of the brainstem?
Vertebral artery
What is the blood supply to the caudal medulla?
Posterior spinal artery, Vertebral artery and Ant. Spinal Artery
What is the blood supply to the rostral medulla?
Vertebral artery and PICA, Anterior Spinal artery
What is the blood supply to the caudal pons?
Basilar artery and AICA
What is the blood supply to the mid to rostral pons?
Basilar artery
What is the blood supply to the midbrain?
Sup. Cerebellar artery and Posterior Cerebellar Artery, and Basilar artery
