E2 Pharm Visual & sensory Flashcards
What is the goal of pharmacotherapy for glaucoma?
-Decrease aqueous humor production
-Increase aqueous humor drainage
What type of pressure should you use have instillation of eye drops?
Nasolacrimal pressure
How long should you hold pressure for?
2 minutes
What does nasolacrimal pressure do?
helps prevent systemic effects
Timolol class
Beta blocker (non-selective)
Betaxolol class
Beta blocker (selective)
MOA of Timolol & betaxolol
Block sympathetic nervous system stimulation of beta receptors
What is timolol & betaxolol used for?
Open-angle glaucoma maintenance treatment
(If acute-angle closure- need drops asap and other interventions)
Adverse effects of timolol & betaxolol
-Transient burning & discomfort
-If goes systemic then systemic effects (duhhhhh)
Contradictions to timolol & betaxolol
Do not give to asthma, COPD, sinus bradycardia, heart failure
(but can give betaxolol to these pts)
Patient teach for timolol & betaxolol
-Must take or will progress to blindness
-Applu nasocrimal pressure w/ instillation
Brimonidine class
Alpha2 adrenergic agonist
Latanoprost class
Prostaglandin analogs
Latanoprost MOA
Increase outflow drainage of aqueous humor
Indications for latanoprost
Open angle glaucoma & Ocular HTN
