E2- Embodied Cognition Flashcards
situated cognition
learning is participation, it is situated and context dependent
distributed cognition
intelligence is distributed across time, tools, people and activities
connection between situated and distributed
both of these social theories take our environment into account
-leaning consists of multiple internal and external factors
Embodied cognition: historical perspective
-notion that the mind and body are separate
-the brain is not DISembodied like a brain in a jar
-our brains affect and are affected by our bodies
-
Embodied cognition defined:
- comprises a group of theories
- cognitive processes are deeply rooted in our bodies’ interaction with the environment SOO the way we think is shaped by the way we exist in the world
- ** body affects mind and mind affects body
3 domains that demonstrate the embodied nature of cognition
- body
- gesture
- language
The role of the body
- How we change our bodies based on our cognition
- body leaning (back for past and forward for future)
- holding coffee (warm/cold people)
- room temperature (snubbed/accepted-thought temp in room was higher for those who felt accepted)
- cleaning hands (when asked to remember a bad deed more likely to ask for sanitizer) - How we change our cognition based on our bodies
- botox (can’t frown)
- power poses
The role of gesture
- our hands are not simple a communicative tool
- they help up think and they shape our cognition
- research has shown that gesture is an important cognitive tool

irrelevant gestures

The role of language
we use physical metaphors to explain the world around us ex: -happy is up -sad is down -conscious is up -unconscious is down -health and life are up -sickness and death are down ( he fell ill, he's at the peak of his health)
how does role of language connect to embodied cognition
- metaphors are found in everyday life, in perception, and in action
- language and metaphors are evidence of our conceptual system
- many metaphors are based on how our bodies are oriented in the world
What does not count as embodied cognition
- kinesthetic learning style
- learning through movement
- simple implementing activities into instruction
