E2: Developmental anomalies of the jaws Flashcards
What are the different developmental anomalies of the jaw?
- Cleft Palate/Alveolar Process as part of Cleft Lip and Palate
- Crouzon Syndrome
- Treacher Collins Syndrome
- Hemifacial Microsomia
- Hemifacial Hyperplasia
- Lingual Salivary gland depression
- Cherubism
What are the clinical features of cleft palate/alveolar process?
- Part of Cleft Lip and Palate: most common developmental
- craniofacial abnormality
- Cleft lip: failure of fusion of medial nasal process and maxillary
process - Cleft palate: failure of fusion of lateral palatal shelf
- Submucous cleft (osseous only)
- May be associated with a syndrome
What are radiographic features of cleft palate/alveolar process?
Well-defined vertical radiolucent defect
Crowding, malformed, missing or extra teeth near cleft
Panoramic radiograph: palatal area radiolucent
CBCT: 3D reconstruction to identify defect and its extension
CBCT: Soft tissue reconstruction for lip defects
