Government Structure
US and IN operate as both DEMOCRACY & REPUBLIC
Democracy
govt in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly and indirectly through a system of representation usually involving free elections
Republic
govt in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law
Federal Representation
2 US Senators –> 6-year term
1 US Representative –> 2-year term
Indiana Representation
1 IN Senator –> 4-year term
1 IN Representative –> 2-year term
How long is a federal congress convened over?
2-year term
How many sessions does a US Congress hold?
2 sessions (start January 3rd)
Can bills be carried over from 1st session to 2nd session?
Yes, but must be passed by the end of the 2nd session
Citizen Legislature
Indiana –> lawmaking is not a full-time profession
General Assembly
legislative body of IN consisting of senators and representatives that meet every 2 years for 2 sessions
1st Regular Session
“long session”
begins in January of odd years –> lasts up to 61 working days ending by April 30th
2nd Regular Session
“short session”
begins in even years –> lasts up to 30 working days ending by March 15th
When there is a difference between the state law and the federal law, which law should you follow?
whichever law is more strict
