What is adware?
-Software specifically designed to display targeted advertisements on your computer (devices).
-Tracks the users internet surfing habits (adverts that relate to the user > popups).
How to prevent adware
-Check what you download (search bar, remove ticks from components (managing cookies)).
What is spyware?
-Software designed to gather information/data about a person or organization (without their knowledge).
-Personal/private data.
-Used for fraudulent or criminal activity.
How does spyware work?
-Keylogger
-Installed without knowledge/consent.
-It detects/records the key presses on a keyboard and then sends this data to a third party to check for patterns > can check for password or personal data.
How to prevent spyware?
-Check what we are downloading (free video sharing, music sharing, VPNs).
-Don’t click on popups.
-Manage cookies.
-Antivirus software should pick up keyloggers.
What is ransomware?
-Type of malware which restricts access to their computer system.
-It demands a ransom - paid to the creators to remove restrictions on the computer.
-Sometimes ask for payment in crypto (hard to trace person).
-Some forms of ransomware can encrypt files on a systems hard drive, will lock a users system.
-It enters the computer system the same way a trojan horse does.
How to prevent ransomware
-Backup of files (data).
-Seperate backup on a disk or cloud > go back to previous versions.
What is a bot?
-An application that is automated to carry out simple and repetitive tasks.

-Spam bots
-Zombie bot
-Chatter bot
-File sharing bot
What is a spam bot?
-Bombard users/people’s inbox with spam emails.
What is a zombie bot?
-Lay dominant until an attack is launched > connected to other zombie bots (large scale attacks).
What is a chatter bot?
-Pretends to be human on social networking/dating websites.
What is a file sharing bot?
-Will provide search results for a users search request (offer a link to download).
-Bots have work like capabilities.
-They can spread/replicate themselves.
How to prevent bots
-Don’t click on links without knowing the source.
-Don’t give out personal info when you chat online.
-Antimalware/firewall can be used to detect and remove.
What is ROOTKIT?
-Computer program that enables a person to gain administrator rights to access a victims computer.
