What is spyware?

A

-Software designed to gather information/data about a person or organization (without their knowledge).
-Personal/private data.
-Used for fraudulent or criminal activity.

How does spyware work?

A

-Keylogger
-Installed without knowledge/consent.
-It detects/records the key presses on a keyboard and then sends this data to a third party to check for patterns > can check for password or personal data.

How to prevent spyware?

A

-Check what we are downloading (free video sharing, music sharing, VPNs).
-Don’t click on popups.
-Manage cookies.
-Antivirus software should pick up keyloggers.

What is ransomware?

A

-Type of malware which restricts access to their computer system.
-It demands a ransom - paid to the creators to remove restrictions on the computer.
-Sometimes ask for payment in crypto (hard to trace person).
-Some forms of ransomware can encrypt files on a systems hard drive, will lock a users system.
-It enters the computer system the same way a trojan horse does.

What is ROOTKIT used for?

A

-Used to hide illegal files
-Can use the computer as part of a larger scale cyber attack or to steal personal data
-Installed by hacking a victims password, ROOTKIT is then buried in the operating system without knowledge

A

-Ensure strong password (changed on a regular basis).
-Don’t install software from memory sticks lying around.
