What is E-security/E-safety?
-Protecting personal data to avoid online exploitation either by bullying or identity theft.
Define confidential
Needs to be kept secret
Define legitimate
Genuine/real document
Define malicious code
Code that is intended to harm the computer
List types of personal data
-Bank details, medical records, political opinions, addresses etc.
How to stay safe online:
-Only open websites from trusted sources
-Do not open email attachments from unknown sources
-Be careful when sending or providing personal data/pictures (geotagging) - stores your geographical position.
What is phishing?
-An unauthorized person attempts to gather personal information by disguising themselves as a legitimate company (by email).
-They urge you to click a link which then takes them through to a fake website + URL (usually requires immediate attention).
-Enter your personal details unknowingly .
How to prevent phishing
-Check URL
-Spelling/grammar mistakes
-Never open anything from an unknown person
What is smishing?
SMS Fishing:
-Carried out using text messages > click on link or give number to ring.
How to prevent smishing
-Not installing applications if someone asks you to from an unknown server.
-Have malware security software.
What is vishing?
(Voice fishing):
-Usually via telephone
-Disguised as legit
-Urgent action required
-eg. your bank account has been compromised > get you to transfer money to another account.
What is pharming?
(Hacker,harming):
-Hacker installs a malicious piece of software or code onto a computer or computer network.
-Creates a fake website (looks like the banks website), redirects the genuine traffic to the fake website.
-Customer enters bank details unknowingly.
How to prevent pharming
-Checking padlock symbol on URL
-Use antivirus software
-Check when website was last visited
