E Flashcards
What is scaly blepharitis?
Low-grade inflammation on top of abnormal denatured irritating secretions of the lid glands, associated with seborrheic dermatitis.
Symptoms include discomfort, heaviness of lids, and itching.
What are the signs of scaly blepharitis?
Small white scales (dry or wet greasy) that, when removed, reveal a hyperemic lid margin without ulceration.
Usually associated with scalp dandruff and seborrheic skin lesions.
What is the treatment for scaly blepharitis?
Lid hygiene (scrubs), antiseborrheic eye ointment to the lid margin, and systemic anti-seborrheic treatment for weeks or months.
What are the symptoms of ulcerative (staphylococcal) blepharitis?
Heaviness and discomfort (burning sensation) with discharge.
What are the signs of ulcerative blepharitis?
Dry scales and yellow crusts encircle the lash root, gluing them together (known as collarettes).
Removal leaves minute ulcers that bleed easily and heal by scar.
