Sudden onset, wheezing, increased expiratory phase
Asthma
Sudden onset, clear lungs, no Hx of dispense
Pulmonary embolus
Fever, sputum, unilateral rales/rhonchi
Pneumonia
Decreased bilateral breath sounds, tracheal deviation
Pneumothorax
Distal extremity paresthesias, caffeine use
Panic attack
Pallor, gradual over days/weeks
Anemia
Pulsus paradoxicus, decreased heart sounds, JVD
Tamponade
Palpitations, syncope
Arrhythmia (almost any one)
Dullness to percussion at bases
Pleural effusion
Long smoking history
COPD
Recent anesthetic use, brown blood not improved with oxygen, clear lungs on auscultation, cyanosis
Methemoglobinemia
Burning building or car
Carbon monoxide poisoning
rapid onset in a tall, skinny teen; no trauma
Spontaneous pneumothorax
Tracheal deviation away from side with absent lung sounds
Tension pneumothorax
Orthopnea/PND
CHF
