difficulty with any stage of swallowing
dysphagia
the process or act of swallowing
deglutition
What goes into the anatomy of a swallow?
brain, cranial nerves, muscles
What are the STAGES of swallowing?
5 stages:
1) preoral
2) oral preparatory
3) oral
4) pharyngeal
5) esophageal
food visually and olfactory appreciated causing saliva stimulation, prep mouth movements, reach for utensils
preoral stage
food received by mouth turned into bolus and mixed with saliva - bolus then brought to center of tongue
oral preparatory stage
tongue squeezes bolus against hard palate moving it backward
oral stage
breathing stops (swallowing apnea) reducing possibility of aspiration, vocal cords close, pharyngeal muscles contract to propel bolus through pharynx, larynx
pharyngeal stage
bolus transported through esophagus - lower esophageal sphincter relaxes letting the bolus pass into the stomach
esophageal stage
What is a common sign of aspiration?
coughing
What are the 2 components of dysphagia assessment?
1) clinical assessment
2) instrumental evaluation
What are the progression of fluids?
1) no fluids at all
2) honey-thick fluids
3) nectar-thick fluids
4) thin, flavored fluids
5) water
