What is Dyspepsia?
A
- another word for indigestion
- symptoms comes from upper stomach (stomach, oesophagus, duodenum)

Aetiology
A
- GORD
- Peptic Ulcer Disease
- Excessive drinking/smoking
- Fatty/spicy foods
- Gallstones/gastritis/use of NSAIDs

Pathophysiology
A
- Stomach acid and digestive enzymes balance disturbed = impaired digestion
- Symptom can get worse = inflammation/irritation to stomach lining

Risk factors
A
- Too much stress/anxiety
- Ageing process, women
- Obesity : too much weight puts unnecessary pressure on stomach/other organs
- Smoking : weaken lower oesophageal sphincter, reduce blood flow to stomach lining

Signs/symptoms
A
- Nausea/vomiting/acid reflux/heartburn
- Discomfort/pain in upper abdomen
- Bloating/feel full a lot after small meals

Diagnosis
A
- Medical history/physical examination
- Urea breath test
- Stool test: rule out H pylori
- FBC: rule out anaemia
- Endoscopy/biopsy: review presence of H pylori/malignancy

Management
A
- Lifestyle change
- Antacids/PPIs
- Treat underlying causes (H ployri infection/gastritis)
