Q

MP: What are the ways to apply dynamic range compression on a song.

A

Macro: zoom out and look at the different parts of the song and add volume automation.
Meso: “ride the fader” e.g. follow the voice and automate the volume when it’s too quiet or too loud.
Micro: a compressor or expander that analyzes the sound and adjusts the volume accordingly.

Q

MP: what is dB SPL. What is zero db spl?

A

Q

MP: why is it important to mix consistently at the same level?

A

Because our hearing frequency response changes with amplitude. The quieter, the more you hear the mid end, and the highs and lows roll off. The louder (80db) it flattens out a bit.
