Dynamic Effects Flashcards
MP: What are the ways to apply dynamic range compression on a song.
Macro: zoom out and look at the different parts of the song and add volume automation.
Meso: “ride the fader” e.g. follow the voice and automate the volume when it’s too quiet or too loud.
Micro: a compressor or expander that analyzes the sound and adjusts the volume accordingly.
MP: What is the Transient of a sound?
a transient is a high amplitude, short-duration sound at the beginning of a waveform that occurs in phenomena such as musical sounds, noises or speech
MP: what is dB SPL. What is zero db spl?
Decibel sound pressure level. 0 db is the level of the quietest audible sound, the threshold of hearing.
MP: why is it important to mix consistently at the same level?
Because our hearing frequency response changes with amplitude. The quieter, the more you hear the mid end, and the highs and lows roll off. The louder (80db) it flattens out a bit.
