What is development and how are countries classified on their development
Development- an improvement in living standard through a better use of recourses
LIDC- poorest, low living standard
EDC- becoming richer, economy is progressing
AC- wealthy, money spent on services
How are LIDC’s, EDC’s and AC’s distributed
LIDC’s- central Africa
EDC’s- Asia, southern America, north and South Africa
AC’s- North America, Eastern Europe, Oceana
How does GNI and GDP show uneven development (economic)
GNI- average income per person per year
GDP- value of goods/services produced per person per year
Total amount is spread equally, not true in reality creating a rich and poor divide
How does literacy rate and life expectancy show uneven development (social)
Literacy rate- percentage of population who can read and write over 15, lower standard of education in LIDC’s
Life expectancy- average lifespan of someone born in the country, low quality healthcare decreasing it
How does the HDI show uneven development
HDI- uses life expectancy, education and income from to decide on development
Covers all the effects for a lack of development wealth health and education
Physical factors influencing human development
Natural recourses- access to potable water
Climate- attract tourists
Location- landlocked countries find difficulty trading
How human factors affect development
Healthcare- if poor people can’t work, no contribution to economy
Aid- reliance can stop trade links from forming
Education- skilled workforce to produce more services and goods
Why countries can’t break out of poverty
Debt- high interest leads to services and infrastructure underfunded
Trade- TNC’s take profit away from communities
Political unrest- corruption causes lack of attention to public services
