Airborne Operation Critical Components

ADZSO, PJM, AJM, Safety, MALFO (Rigger), Parachute Detail, Medical Personnel
*Number of PJM/AJM/Safety depends on the type of ABN OP.
What are requirements for JM qualification?
- Non-SOF:
- 1-507 PIR/82d ABN DIV JM Course; or
- SOF JM Course with Non-SOF JM Refresher
- SOF:
- SOF JM Course; or
- 1-507 PIR/82d ABN DIV JM Course with SOF JM Refresher
JM Currency: Current static line jumper and…
• PJM or AJM duties within 180 days; or
• Completed a JM refresher course in the previous 180
days and be a current jumper (Regardless of JM rating)
• If a senior-rated or master-rated parachutist,
performed duty as a safety on military, high-performance fixed-wing aircraft within 180 days

PJM: E5 and above, JM Current and Qualified, 2x AJM, 2x Safety
AJM: E5 and above, JM Current and Qualified, 2x Safety
Safety: E5 and above, JM Current and Qualified, JM Refresher
Airborne Commander
Duties and Responsibilities
- Appoint JM Team and any other key personnel
- Coordinate ABN CDR Briefings
- Prepare ABN OPORD
- Ensure Risk Assessment signed by Unit CDR
- Ensure Manifest is completed
- Ensure DZ Survey is current
- Delay or Cancel ABN OP for weather, technical or safety conditions
- Ensure S.A.T. completed
- Attend (or send a rep.) Joint Mission Brief
- Ensure proper uniform & equipment for ABN OP
- ABN CDR may delegate authority, but not responsibility
General JM Responsibilities
- All JM duties begin immediately upon notification.
- Regardless of rank, AJM/Safety under the command of PJM.
- Don’t sacrifice safety standard to meet a timeline or to conduct the airborne operation.
- ABN CDR & PJM can delegate authority but cannot delegate responsibility
JM Duties at Unit Area
- Appointment of PJMs, AJMs, Safeties, and other duties
- Initial ABN CDR meeting
- Aircrew coordination
- Risk Assessment prep
- Build manifests
PJM Duties at Unit Area
- Mission and Ground Tactical Plan
- Air Movement Plan
- Landing Plan (DZ, Drop Times, #/type of loads, type of drops)
- ABN OP Timeline and Locations
- Type of A/C and Special Items of Equipment
- A/C Tail #, Chalk # and Parking spots
AJM Duties at Unit Area
- JM Rehearsal
- Initial Manifest
- Cross-loading (Door bundles, large equipment);
- Inspect jumpers’ ID Tag/Card, rigging of equipment and containers
- JM/Safety Kit per A/C
Safety Kit per A/C. Items to consider are:
- 1 Universal Parachutist Recovery Bag per 30 jumpers for D-Bags or (1:15 for Aviator Kit Bags)
- 2 Reserve Parachutes
- Knife (Carried by JM/Safety)
- ¼” Cotton Webbing
- Flashlight (Night Ops)
- Masking Tape
- Complete Harness Single Point Release
- HPT Lowering Line
- Retainer Bands
- Trash bags
- Extra parts for ACH and Ballistic Helmet
- Ear Plugs and airsickness bag
Sustained Airborne Training (SAT)
- All personnel require sustained airborne training to rehearse basic airborne techniques within 24 hours of TOT.( If >24 hours O-5, Waiverable)
- SAT includes: Pre-jump Training, Actions in the A/C, and PLF’s.
PJM Duties at DAF
- PJM/DACO Briefing:
- Manifest Distribution:
- DACO - 2 copies (Original plus 1 copy)
- PJM- 1 copy
- DZSO- 1 copy
- ABN CDR- 1 copy
- Chute Detail- 1 copy
- Marshalling Area Control Officer Brief or “MACO Brief” Must be done within 24 hours of Station Time.
- PJM/Aircrew Initial Coordination:
- Aircraft Inspection: (NLT 1 hr prior to station time)
AJM/Safety Duties at DAF
- Parachute Issue:
- Draw two reserve parachutes and extra UPRB’s (1:30) or if AKB’s (1:15) for the D-Bags.
- Draw four sets of T-11R inserts for PJM, AJM, and door bundle pushers, if necessary.
- DAF Layout Inspection:
- Parachute and Equipment: Buddy System don NLT 1 hr prior to load time
- Final DACO Coordination (if PJM directs):
- JMPI:
AJM/Safety Duties at DAF
- AJM/Safeties conduct the JMPI. PJM only helps to meet Station Time.
- JM not designated as AJM/Safeties for the ABN OP will not perform any JM duties (unless authorized by the PJM).
- Airfield Movement:
- Loading Aircraft: With the Safeties, load the troops in reverse chalk order
JM Duties in Flight
All JM’s must: • Enforce flight rules and regulations. • Never Sacrifice Safety. • Be well Rehearsed. • Be oriented.
PJM/AJM Duties in Flight
- Issue time warnings and jump commands.
- Perform door safety checks.
- Perform outside air safety checks.
- Cancel drop if unsafe conditions exists.
- Eject door bundles.
- Control the exit of all jumpers:
- Red Light Procedure
- Jump Refusal
- Unsafe Jumper
- Assist in retrieving a towed jumper
Safety Duties in Flight
•Assist the JM’s in safely conducting the airborne
operation
•Relocating of Jumpers on the A/C (Refusals,
Unsafe, Sick).
• Begin checking static-lines at command “hookup.”
• Control static lines during exit procedures.
• Visually check for towed jumpers.
• Retrieve static line and deployment bags.
• Control personnel and equipment remaining on
the A/C
Safety Duties at Recovery Airfield
• Turn over control of equipment to DACO at
DAF.
• Turn over non-jumpers to DACO who will
conduct JMPI (If Jump Refusal)
• Notify the DACO and prepare to provide
statements for any accidents/incidents, jump
refusals, malfunctions, etc.
• Police inside of aircraft
