Resists

During the Second World War, there were individuals and organizations all over Europe who resisted the German occupiers. There is also resistance in the Netherlands. The resistance, also called ‘the underground’, sabotages the occupying forces’ policies by killing Nazis and collaborators and committing other attacks. The resistance also helps Jews, forced laborers and political opponents to go into hiding and distributes illegal newspapers with uncensored news about the progress of the war.

Onderduiken

A

Go into hiding
During the war, the occupying forces randomly arrested certain groups of people. Some people go into hiding. It mainly concerns Jews, members of the resistance who are in danger and people who have been called up to work in Germany. They hide in attics, cellars or other secret hiding places, such as farms. For example, hiding huts are dug in nature reserves. Because food and clothing are rationed, people in hiding need help from others to provide them with basic necessities. There are heavy penalties for helping people in hiding.

A

Reconstruction (1945-1965)

After the Second World War, Europe was completely disrupted. Homes, factories and buildings have been destroyed or damaged. Much infrastructure, such as bridges, roads and railways, has been destroyed by the war. Little is left of the pre-war economy. With united forces, the Netherlands was rebuilt in all its facets in the period 1945-1965. In Eastern Europe the political situation remains unstable.
