Durkheim believed
there is a function to deviance since labeling some acts as deviant reminds people what is normal
functionalist do not want to clean up society because
it makes the people who are good better. when people punish deviant behavior it reaffirms people’s belief in what is right and good
norms
rules or expectations that are socially enforced
mechanical solidarity
cohesion within a society based on shared beliefs, lifestyles, and occupations.
collective consciousness
refers to common ideas, attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge that are shared amongst a social group, organization, or society
organic solidarity
social cohesion based upon the dependence individuals have on each other in more advanced society
anomie
Durkheim’s definition of chaos. decrease in social solidarity resulting from industrialization
parsons believed that
sex roles for men and women contribute to stability. socialization produces instrumental or rational and work oriented males. an expressive or sensitive, nurturing, emotional female
merton believed
social institutions or phenomena can have both positive fx and problematic dysfunctions. positive or negative, there is still a contribution
manifest function
obvious, intended functions of a given phenomenon or institution
latent functions
functions that are not recognized or expected
