4 stages of socialization
preparatory stage, play stage, game stage, adult stage
preparatory stage
children younger than 3 years old. they relate to the world as they are the center of the universe
play stage
3 or 4 years of age. they learn to take the attitudes and roles of the people with whom they interact
game stage
begins when children are about 5. they learn to take the roles of multiple others. we stay in this game stage for a while, with some never maturing out of it
adult stage
they act on a set of socially normative principles that may or may not serve their self interest. this is when the ME is fully developed and some never reach this stage
generalized other
abstract sense of society’s norms and values by which people evaluate themselves.
the adult stage utilizes
abstract and complex cultural symbols such as love and hate, success and failure, friendship and morality
significant others
specific people who are important in children’s lives. during the play stage those are the people you are modeling
