Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Flashcards
etiology of DMD
inherited in an x-linked recessive pattern
- mutated gene on x chromosome from mother
define DMD
Genetic neuromuscular condition characterized by progressive muscle weakness and contractures
what causes DMD
absence of dystrophin protein
– maintains muscle integrity
s/s of DMD
pseudohypertrophy due to fat and connective tissue build up
muscle weakness
cognitive impairments / respiratory decline
ages significant with DMD
1-6 y/o = muscle weakness
6-11 y/o = progressive decline
10 y/o = respiratory decline/cardiomyopathy
13 = full wheelchair use
20’s = life expectancy
primary interventions for those with DMD
anticipatory/preventative measures
stretching
submax aerobic exercise
strength training
pharmacological
surgery if indicated
assistive technology for those with DMD
AFO = night, for contracture prevention
KAFO = late ambulatory, non-ambulatory phase
Powered W/C
