DT4 - ESR Handout Flashcards
What is an Emergency Speed Restriction (ESR)?
A speed restriction not published in the WON, or a TSR with specific conditions differing from the WON.
When is a speed restriction classified as an ESR?
When it is:
* Not published in the WON
* A TSR that applies at a different time
* A TSR with a slower speed than published in the WON
* A TSR re-imposed at a lower speed after being eased
* A TSR re-imposed after previously being removed
What does NERDS stand for in the context of ESR?
N - Not published in the WON
E - Eased to show a higher speed but then re-imposed at a lower speed
R - Re-imposed after previously being removed or withdrawn
D - Different time to that shown in the WON
S - Slower speed than the speed published in the WON
True or False: An ESR is still classified as such if details are shown in an amendment to the WON.
True
What actions should be taken when an ESR has been imposed but track equipment has not yet been erected?
Trains will be diverted onto other unaffected lines if possible.
What should a signaller do if it is not possible to divert trains due to an ESR?
Stop and inform the driver about the restriction before arriving at the location.
What must a driver understand when informed of an ESR where the equipment has yet to be erected?
They must understand:
* Which line is affected
* Where the restriction starts and ends
* The speed of the restriction (not more than 20 mph)
Fill in the blank: A driver must reduce their speed well before the start of the _______.
[speed restriction]
What is the maximum speed for a train under an ESR?
20 mph
What must a driver ensure before resuming line speed after an ESR?
The whole of the train has passed clear of the restriction.
What will happen until the necessary equipment for an ESR has been provided?
The above arrangements will continue.
What must be working at all times on the Emergency Indicator?
Two brilliant white flashing strobe lights
The functionality of these lights is critical for safety.
What should you do if you see an Emergency Indicator with one or both lights out?
Inform the signaller immediately, stopping the train if necessary
This action is crucial to ensure safety and compliance.
When must the Emergency Indicator stay in place?
Until:
* The details of the speed restriction appear in the WON
* The speed restriction is withdrawn
WON stands for Weekly Operating Notice.
What will the signaller do if any light is out at an Emergency Indicator?
Stop and advise you
This ensures that drivers are informed of any issues affecting safety.
