DT Flashcards
Name some advantages of 3D modelling
Provides a 3D perspective
Easy to remove defects
Can be cheaper in some circumstances
More efficient
Name some disadvantages of virtual modelling
Takes skill and software knowledge about the program
Software may be expensive
What is meant by an ergonomic design?
A design that accounts for the human environment
What is anthropometrics
A branch of ergonomics referred to as the standard measurements used to identify the most ergonomic fashion in varying products
What does CNC stand for?
Computer Numerical Control
What is the programming language that CNC machinery uses to convey operations
G-code
What are some advantages of CNC
no room for human error
Minimal wastage
Fast production
Reduced production cost
What are some disadvantages of CNC
Expensive equipment
Reliant on manual supervision
Recruitment decline ( as in jobs )
Can be energy extortionate
How does the CNC lathe work?
- spins the piece on an axis allowing you to manipulate it to your favour
- allows you to drill, trim and resize you product
How does the CNC router work?
- moves along the x,y and z coordinates
- allows you to visualise your product in a 3D observatory format
- used to cut shapes and or sections out of your piece
How does the 3D printer work?
- Send data from the CAD software to the slicing software
- this data is then sent to the printer
- plastic is heated and to an average of 300 degrees and shelved layer upon layer until the prototype is fully moulded.
What does CAM stand for?
Computer Aided Manufacture
What is a ferrous metal?
A metal consisting of iron as its primary material
What are some examples of ferrous metals?
Steel, carbon steel
What are some properties of ferrous metals?
- highly durable / rigid
- rusts / corrode
- magnetic
