Restorative dentistry
Goal: restore teeth to normal function
restoring defect such as chips, discoloration, or missing teeth.
Esthetic dentistry
Improving the appearance of teeth by repairing or camouflaging imperfections and defects.
General Dentistry also known AS
Operative dentistry
Direct Restoration
directly into a prepared tooth
Restoration made by placing a soft/malleable filling material
Indirect resto
Restoration outside of mouth
using impressions
is seated usually at second appt (cast restoration)
Bonded Restoration
bonding agents used
NO retention groove
- adhesive replace mechanical retention
non-bonded
cavity prep
-retention groove/mechanical retention
bonding agents used.
Indications for Using Amalgam
poor oral self care
cost less$$
problematic moisture control
covered by most insurances
Amalgam Capsule composition
mercury(moldable)
amalgam allow powder
Amalgam alloy powder is a combination of
Silver- strengths
Tin- workability
Copper- corrosion resistance
Zinc -suppresses oxidation
amalgamation or trituration
mixing of amalgam capsule
Galvanic Action
when amg from one tooth meets another
and cause a “shock” to patient
TC purpose
Match the natural tooth color,
bond directly onto tooth surface
Glass Ionomer
adhesion chemically,
and resistance to acid erosion.
Releases fluoride after it set
Veneers
components : composite resin/ porcelain material
BONDED onto tooth surface
Goal :improve aesthetics
Direct Veneers
Chairside by dentist
in one appointment
(prefabricated/ direct buildup bonded)
Indirect Veneers
lab fabricated by lab tech
- requires 2 appts
Diastema Closure
Direct
Composite material
(involves interproximal area Only)
Retentive Pins
Used with a restorative procedure
Support restoration when there is extensive decay
DOSENT ADD STRENGTH only support
Core Build-up
Structural support for the crowns
not enough natural tooth structure
Material : TC or Am
Sedative Dressings/ Trauma control
Typically placed at Spec or Emergency exams,
in response to caries or trauma (fractured tooth)
temporary, soothing measure(Contains eugenol )
Intermediate Restorative Material(IRM)-
temporary filling until material is placed
temporary restorative material
Prefabricated Crowns
Pre-made crowns
Material (stainless steel or acrylic)
1 appointment.
Typically in primary teeth in temporary situations
Whitening restorative
Whitening done BEFORE procedure
Indications for Resto procedures
pain- (exposed dentin)
poor esthetics - change tc
poor function- mal occlusion
maintain alveolar health -prevent bone loss
restore dental health- - replace old restos
Durability- long service life
Contraindications for Resto Procedures
Age - Geriatric - resto for function
Pediatric- may require referral
Lack of alveolar support- tooth mobility
poor health- endanger success of resto
tooth structurally not sound-
Spec exam
Slight discomfort
Emergency exam
Ongoing pain
