Community Inclusion - Sharing in community life.
Community Integration - Living, working, and recreating in the same places as people without disabilities.

Benefits of Inclusion (person)
- Better health

- Improved self-esteem
- More opportunities and access to resources
- Protection of being known
- Greater life experiences
- Greater variety of relationships
- Incentive to learn appropriate social behavior
Benefits of Inclusion (community)
- More diversity
- More inclusion and accessibility for all citizens
- Lower cost of support
- Less reliance on paid supports
- More contributions to the community (paying taxes through work etc)
- People with disabilities can share their gifts and talents with the community
Community Inclusion
Role of DSP
- Gathering and providing information about community resources
- Assessing risk and barriers to community inclusion and developing strategies to minimize them
- Supporting individuals in understanding risks and making decisions
- Being a role model and educator to the individual and the community
- Networking and getting to know community members
Natural Supports
Include the natural state of interdependence.
Supports available to everyone and can include family, friends, peers, services, resources and are usually unpaid.
Help people function with less paid support and increase opportunities to know and be known by the community.
Public transportation, Friends, Neighbors, coworkers
Networking
The process of identifying social contacts for the purpose of making connections.
Used to gather information or find out about new opportunities.
- Find a job, a date, or new friend
Social Inclusion
People with IDD are included in community life.
- Schools, jobs, recreation, congregations
- belong to the community rather than to the system
Right to relationships and intimacy

- Earn a wage
- Meet friends and make connections
